In all our years working in this industry, we had never really heard the term wide format rolling papers until recently. Mind you, that is after years of working with vendors and customers. It just goes to show how much information is out there, and how there is never really a point where you stop learning new things.
The funny part is, we already knew exactly what people meant. We had simply always called them wide papers.
What Makes a Paper “Wide Format”?
A good example is King Size Wide papers from brands like RAW and Elements. Those usually measure 53 mm x 110 mm. By comparison, a king slim is typically 44 mm x 110 mm.
So yes, the difference comes down to 9 mm of extra width.
That may not sound like much at first, but in rolling terms, it is enough to matter.
Wide format rolling papers are exactly what they sound like: papers made a little wider than standard options. That extra width gives you more space to work with when rolling, which is why some smokers prefer them right away. They can feel easier to handle, less restrictive, and better suited for a fuller roll.
What Does the Extra Width Actually Do?
A lot of it comes down to usable space. Some of the paper width gets used up in the overlap when the paper wraps and seals, so the full width is not all available in the finished roll. Assuming about 5 mm of the paper is used in the overlap and seal, a king size wide paper can support a roll that is up to about 23% bigger than a king slim.
That is where the extra width starts to matter.
Why Some Smokers Prefer Wide Papers
And that is really the appeal of wide papers. They give you more room to work with, more flexibility in the roll, and a little more breathing room if you do not want everything to feel so tight and minimal.
Are Wide Papers Right for Everyone?
Of course, wide papers are not for everyone. If you prefer smaller, tighter, or more minimal rolls, a wide paper may feel like more paper than you need. Some smokers want the slimmest format possible, and that is perfectly fine too.
But for smokers who like a fuller roll, or just want a little more space to work with, wide format papers make a lot of sense.
So if you ever run into the term wide format rolling papers, now you know: it is not some mysterious new category. It is just a more formal way of saying what many of us have already known as wide papers all along.
