How to Spot Counterfeit RAW & Elements Rolling Papers

The No-Brainer Way to Keep It Real: How to Spot Counterfeit RAW & Elements

The easiest way to know you’re rolling with the real deal? Buy from an authorized distributor.

No second guessing. No shady sources. No mystery middlemen.

At Matchboxbros, we source directly from HBI International—the company behind trusted brands like RAW, Elements, Juicy Jays, and Cyclones.

When we buy direct, we know where your papers came from. Every extra middleman adds another layer of uncertainty. By keeping the supply chain short, we keep things straightforward and true to the source.

When you buy from Matchboxbros, you’re buying peace of mind.

Didn’t Buy from an Authorized Source? Here’s How to Spot the Fakes

If you didn’t get your papers from a distributor like us, you can still do a quick authenticity check. Here’s what to look for.

1. Check the Fine Print

On newer RAW and Elements packaging, you should see:

  • “Not for tobacco use. For use with legal smoking herbs only.”
  • “Sale only allowed in the United States”

Most retail packs (papers and cones) include both.

One exception: some bulk cone packaging may not include the U.S. sale line. That alone isn’t a dealbreaker.

But if a standard retail pack is missing “Sale only allowed in the United States”, that’s a serious red flag. It could be black-market stock or worse, counterfeit.

2. Spell Check Matters

Counterfeiters are getting better, but sloppy spelling and awkward grammar still happen. If something feels off, trust your instincts (and your inner English teacher).

3. Look for the California Prop 65 Warning

If the product is recent and doesn’t include a California Proposition 65 warning, that’s another warning sign.

All legitimate RAW and Elements papers produced in recent years include this notice. No warning = questionable product.

4. Verify the Distributor Info

Authentic packaging will list:

Distributed by HBI International
Phoenix, AZ 85009, USA

Missing or altered distributor information is a strong indicator something isn’t right.

Clearing Up Some Outdated Packaging Myths

  • “Made in Alcoy, Spain”
This is no longer used on packaging. You may still see “Spain” referenced occasionally, but it’s not a current marketing material.
  • Global Manufacturing
Some products are now made in different regions. For example, certain cones (like Ethereal Cones) may be manufactured in Ireland.
  • “Unrefined,” “Natural Hemp Gum,” “Wind Power”
These claims are no longer used and should not appear on current, legitimate packaging.

Found a Couple of Issues? Here’s What It Might Mean

  • Older Packaging
The most common explanation. Brands refresh designs, and older boxes can stay in circulation for a while. If it came from a trusted distributor, you’re likely fine.
  • Older Merchandise
Rolling papers have a long shelf life when stored properly. Old doesn’t automatically mean fake.
  • Sketchy Source
If multiple red flags show up and you don’t trust the seller, be cautious. It could be old stock—or counterfeit.

Bottom Line

If you want zero doubt, buy from the source.

With Matchboxbros, you’ll always get genuine RAW and Elements papers sourced directly from HBI International.

No fakes.
